The Advance Clinical Social Work Fellowship is designed provides a structured bridge between academic education and clinical independence through several key mechanisms.
Training: Ellie Walter-Goodspeed will participate supervised clinical work which contributes to Social Work licensing requirements. This fellowship is strategically designed to fulfill CT state specific clinical practice and supervision hour requirements for independent licensure eligibility. This structured approach eliminates the uncertainty many early career clinicians face when piecing together supervision and clinical hours independently. This fellowship is designed to advance clinical competence, professional growth and development, leadership skills, along with enhancing awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. Trainees learn to provide individual and family therapy to children served by the Child Study Center's IICAPS (Intensive In home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services). Ellie would be delivering intensive in-home family-focused treatment that helps children and adolescents age 4-18 with complex psychological and behavioral needs returning from or at risk for hospitalization or placement in detention or a residential treatment facility. IICAPS trainees engage family members in a strong working partnership between the child, the family, the school and community.
Mentoring: Supervision and mentorship are provided by our clinical faculty. Ellie Walter-Goodspeed will have a minimum of two hours of individual supervision per week in addition to team supervision. In addition, she will be supported by the Director of Training regarding professional development needs. She will be offered the opportunity of a professional development mentor and will have access to the Vice Chair of Collaborative Excellence.
Education: Ellie Walter-Goodspeed will participate in all of the educational opportunities offered by the Social Work Training Program. These include but not limited to weekly Social Work Seminar, summer course of Psychopharmacology for Non-Physicians, fall course of Circle of Security, Parent Management Training, weekly Clinical Rounds and team, Clinical Education Meetings, Grand Rounds, as well as departmental educational opportunities open to all fellows and trainees.
The supervised specialization in a focused clinical area allows fellows to develop expertise in specific populations or treatment modalities that are often only briefly covered in general MSW programs. This depth of specialized knowledge significantly enhances clinical effectiveness with complex clinical work. The intensive supervision provided during this fellowship is occurring more frequent and in depth than standard professional supervision. It accelerates clinical skill development through regular case consultation, direct observation, and personalized feedback from experienced practitioners. This level of mentorship helps refine therapeutic techniques and clinical decision making. Through this training, fellows gain advance diagnostic formulation skills and they have the opportunity to develop nuanced understanding of psychopathology and treatment planning that build upon foundation level MSW training. The protected learning environment of a fellowship allows for focused skill development, creating space for deeper reflection and integration of theory with practice. Finally, this fellowship provides specialized training in professional development areas such as clinician documentation, ethical decision- making, and development of professional presentations all which prepare social workers for leadership roles within the field of Social Work.
