The training experience is designed to support Kenna Morgan’s long-term goal of successful application and matriculation into medical school, while also building a strong foundation for future academic medicine and clinical practice.
Through this role, Kenna will gain exposure to clinical research methodology, human subjects research principles, data analysis, and scientific writing. These experiences will strengthen core competencies needed for medical school preparation, including analytical thinking, understanding of clinical research design, and familiarity with healthcare systems and patient care environments.
In addition, Kenna will gain direct exposure to the clinical setting through structured shadowing of Dr. Belsky during select Emergency Department clinical shifts, providing insight into real-world clinical decision-making and patient care delivery.
Training Plan:
Kenna will receive hands-on, structured training in clinical research operations within an academic medical environment. This training will build upon her prior academic experience and prepare her for future success in medical school and academic medicine.
Key training components include:
• Conducting patient interviews, collecting clinical and research data, and ensuring data quality and integrity
• Recruiting and enrolling patients into human subjects research studies and clinical trials
• Assisting with processing, handling, and shipment of biospecimens in accordance with study protocols, including phlebotomy training where applicable
• Conducting study visits, follow-up assessments, and longitudinal patient tracking
• Maintaining regulatory compliance, including IRB documentation and human subjects research requirements• Utilizing electronic health record systems (e.g., Epic) and research data management platforms
• Contributing to scientific writing and manuscript development, with opportunities to participate in abstracts and peer-reviewed publications based on interest and performance
• Participating in clinical trial and research team meetings (typically held monthly per study)
All research activities will be conducted in compliance with Yale University policies and federal regulations governing human subjects research.
Mentoring:
Kenna will receive structured, ongoing mentorship from Dr. Justin Belsky to ensure consistent guidance, skill development, and academic support throughout her training experience.
The mentoring structure will include:
• Weekly meetings (virtual or in-person) with Dr. Belsky to review research progress, address questions, and provide ongoing guidance
• Quarterly in-person meetings focused on long-term development, including medical school application planning, career exploration, and academic advising
• Ongoing informal communication as needed to support day-to-day research activities and professional development
This mentoring framework is designed to provide consistent oversight, individualized feedback, and sustained support to help Kenna progress toward her academic and clinical career goals.
