Training: Eliza will receive training in various clinical research skills, including:
• How to identify and enroll eligible study participants
• How to properly conduct study visits
• Techniques for handling and processing of blood and urine samples in the laboratory
• The process of design and maintenance of online databases for research purposes.
Eliza will acquire extensive clinical experience through direct engagement with both study participants and medical staff. This role will provide an opportunity for face-to-face interactions with participants and their families and will provide the opportunity to experience process and protocols for clinical research studies.
Mentoring: Mentorship will be provided through weekly, close collaboration with senior lab members and one-on-one meetings with Dr. Knauert. These meetings will focus on discussing short-term and long-term goals, scientific advancement, and career development. Furthermore, additional informal mentorship opportunities may arise from collaborating with other researchers within the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.
Education: Eliza obtained her undergraduate degree in environmental sciences and her graduate degree in infectious disease and global health. She has just completed the coursework for a non-degree, premed program as her goal is to apply to medical schools in the future. This training will afford her direct experience with clinical research which will help to guide her in determining future career paths and developing the skills necessary to be successful with future medical school applications.
