About the Role
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center invites applications for a full-time Academic Cytopathologist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. This is an exciting opportunity to join a nationally recognized cancer center where diagnostic excellence, academic collaboration, and translational discovery intersect to advance the future of cancer care.
The successful candidate will become part of a highly collegial Anatomic Pathology faculty practicing within a complete subspecialty sign-out model. We are seeking a physician with strong communication and diagnostic skills in aspiration and exfoliative cytopathology who is passionate about academic medicine, multidisciplinary collaboration, and advancing innovative pathology practices in a cutting-edge oncologic environment.
This role offers meaningful opportunities for leadership, education, translational research, and program development within one of the nation’s premier cancer centers.
What You’ll Do
• Provide expert diagnostic interpretation in aspiration and exfoliative cytopathology
• Perform rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) via telepathology for fine needle aspiration procedures conducted by interventional radiology and endoscopy teams
• Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary clinical teams to support accurate, timely, and patient-centered cancer diagnosis and care
• Participate in subspecialty Anatomic Pathology sign-out within a highly collaborative academic department
• Participate in translational and clinical research initiatives within the Department and across Roswell Park
• Utilize extensive institutional shared resources and biorepository infrastructure to support innovative research efforts
• Pursue independent academic and scientific interests with departmental support, including protected research time and financial resources
• Contribute to scholarly activities including publications, presentations, and collaborative academic initiatives
• Teach and mentor residents, fellows, medical students, and cytotechnology trainees

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is nationally recognized for excellence in oncologic pathology, translational research, and subspecialized diagnostic care. Faculty work collaboratively across disciplines to support innovative cancer diagnosis, biomarker development, precision oncology initiatives, and translational scientific discovery.

What You’ll Bring
• MD, DO, or equivalent degree with completion of a Cytopathology Fellowship
• Board Eligible or Board Certified in Pathology
• Eligibility for a New York State medical license
• Strong diagnostic expertise in aspiration and exfoliative cytopathology
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary clinical teams
• Interest in academic medicine, pathology education, and mentorship
• Experience or interest in translational and clinical research initiatives
• A collaborative and intellectually curious approach to diagnostic pathology and scientific discovery
• Interest in leadership opportunities within fellowship education or cytotechnology training programs
• Executive presence, professionalism, and commitment to delivering high-quality oncologic pathology services
• Dedication to fostering a culture grounded in innovation, inclusion, accountability, compassion, safety, and High Reliability Organization principles
Candidates with interest, experience, or additional training in a Surgical Pathology subspecialty are encouraged to apply, though this is not required.
