Job Purpose
This is a senior role leading our Middleware Engineering team where you will use deep technical expertise in platforms like Tomcat, EC2, container platforms, DataStage, Message Queue, Enterprise Service Bus, JP1 and HULFT to solve complex technical challenges.
Job Responsibilities
Partner Vendor Management:
• Manage relationships with locally-represented India-based offshore service vendors
• Coordinate development activities, quality standards, and deliverables with offshore teams
• Provide technical guidance and ensure knowledge transfer progression between onshore and offshore teams
Application Ownership
• Enabling business applications teams to focus on industry and client requirements by taking ownership of back-end applications providing shared services for data interchange, data transformation, document image archives, and data subscriptions.
• Provide interfaces to anti-social forces and MyNumber compliance information.
Operational Excellence
• Serve as the primary point of contact for senior leadership and key stakeholders, communicating progress, risks, and dependencies related to the middleware portfolio
• Directly lead, mentor, and manage multiple engineering teams (Web, Backend, Platform), fostering a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation
• Define and track performance metrics for the engineering teams, establishing clear goals and expectations and ensuring accountability for the timely delivery of high-quality solutions, using metrics to measure success and drive improvement
• Partner with product management and business stakeholders to translate high-level strategic visions into clear, actionable roadmaps and technical solutions, ensuring alignment with business needs
Technical Expertise
• Maintain a strong understanding of essential middleware technologies like Tomcat, Pega, and cloud platforms like EC2 and Container platforms, including configuring, managing, and integrating various data interchange platforms like DataStage ETL, Enterprise Service Bus, and HULFT, and troubleshooting and setting up new infrastructure
• Define and execute a forward-looking strategic vision for the middleware engineering team, emphasizing the integration of cutting-edge technologies like AI/ML to drive product enhancements and improve user experiences, particularly within cloud platforms including Tomcat, EC2, container platforms, Pega, DataStage ETL, Message Queue, Enterprise Service Bus, JP1 and HULFT.
• Lead technical research and innovation, spearheading the creation, refinement, and enforcement of development and architectural standards to ensure the middleware technology stack remains sustainable and seamlessly integrates with the broader IT ecosystem
Security and Compliance
• Direct the design, implementation, and enhancement of application security architectures across various scales and types of applications, collaborating closely with security and infrastructure teams to ensure robust protection against threats like DDoS attacks
• Architect and deliver secure, scalable, and highly available systems infrastructure, including disaster recovery solutions, advising management on application and supporting technology purchases and environment upgrades/modifications

Language Skills: Bilingual spoken and written expertise in Japanese and English to communicate and collaborate with local IT teams and overseas vendors
Expert-level understanding and practical experience with core middleware technologies like Tomcat, Pega, EC2, as well as containerization and orchestration platforms
Proven proficiency in managing, configuring, integrating, and troubleshooting ETL and data interchange platforms such as Enterprise Service Bus, MQ, and HULFT, and developing and deploying high-availability architecture solutions on these platforms.
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools is required
AI Tools Knowledge: Experience or familiarity with generative AI development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot (preferred)
Project Management: Experience working in multi-project environments with ability to manage concurrent development initiatives
Vendor Management: Ability to coordinate with offshore development teams and manage vendor relationships
Data Management: Understanding of data warehouse concepts, customer data management, and system integration
Demonstrated experience in architecting, designing, and delivering secure, scalable, and highly available systems infrastructure, including robust Disaster Recovery sites, spanning hybrid and multi-cloud environments
Strong planning and design abilities for implementing Infrastructure Disaster Recovery strategies (including BIAs, RTOs, RPOs) and security solutions for complex cloud environments (e.g., AWS)
Expert knowledge of security and compliance best practices relevant to insurance or regulated environments, including data security through encryption, SSO, automated checks, and audit trails
Experience leveraging AI/ML models for predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and intelligent automation within enterprise systems, particularly within middleware and security contexts
Expertise in conducting risk assessments to identify potential threats, implementing preventative measures, recommending mitigation strategies, and tracking risk exceptions
Proactive mindset focused on refining processes, increasing efficiency, enhancing production operations, and driving continuous improvement in technical standards and development methodologies
Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership and key stakeholders
Demonstrated expertise in influencing technical direction and driving cross-functional initiatives
