

Job Description:
Genetic counselors help patients understand and adapt to the medical, psychological, and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. This includes interpreting family and medical histories to assess the chance of disease occurrence or recurrence, education about genetic concepts (inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources, and research), and counseling to promote informed choices and adaptation to genetic disease.
The primary focus of a genetic counselor is to provide genetic counseling to patients within their specialty. The genetic counselor will also be responsible for assisting with provider education and other clinic support. They will function within a clinical specialty team of genetic counselors and genetic counseling assistants, as well as have working relationships with the non-genetics clinical staff in their area. As more experience is gained, the genetic counselor will have opportunities to take on additional projects and seek professional development in the field.
Essential Functions
Provides direct genetic counseling services to patients, applicable patient care specialists, and referring physicians. Certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required within two years of hire. (If not certified at the time of hire, must be supervised by a board-certified geneticist or a certified genetic counselor.)
Core responsibilities of this role include:
Utilizes specific detailed knowledge of genetics and acts as a consultant with applicable patient care specialists and referring care providers in providing professional options for the development of a collaborative plan of care.
Completes interview history and counsels patients referred for genetic testing and other circumstances.
Obtains medical records, prepares family pedigrees; utilizes medical literature in the analysis of genetic disorders related to individualized patient care.
Provides individualized patient and family education, emotional support, and counseling, including analysis of options for current diagnostic testing, care and intervention, and future ramifications for patient, family, or offspring.
Documents and records contact with patient, ancillary services, communications, and counseling by complete and appropriate documentation.
Completes documentation to support billing requirements.
Participate in case conferences and other meetings that enhance up-to-date knowledge of the field.
In addition to the above, this position will allow for professional development and growth. As experience is gained, the position has additional opportunities in clinical processes, education/supervision and research that may include:
Genetic counseling graduate student supervision and/or education
Provide Intermountain Healthcare staff education about genetic counseling topics (journal club, other in-service)
Create educations materials for patients and providers
Support clinic-specific workflow standardization
Actively participate in Intermountain research or project committees (example: Commission on Cancer) and/or other specialty-focused research

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
$38.77 - $59.82
