The Role:

As a Backend Engineer, you will join the brand‑new Sportsbet division in Porto, created in 2024, becoming part of an agile Software Development Team responsible for the full lifecycle of applications. You’ll use cutting‑edge technologies to deliver exceptional value to our customers, while scaling our platform to meet the demands of worldwide markets.
You’ll play a key role in GBP adoption and adaptation, designing and building scalable solutions that leverage AWS technologies for performance, security, and reliability.
From developing flowcharts, layouts, and documentation to supporting the Product Owner with requirements and the team with solutions, developing unit, component, and integrated tests with the guidance of the team's QA - you can expect to execute the full software development lifecycle.
Programming well-designed, testable, efficient code to solve business needs and deploy applications in a Continuous Integration platform, as well as testing and documenting the implemented solutions will be a big part of your day-to-day.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Design, develop, and maintain high-performance backend applications in Java
Optimise code for concurrency, low latency, and large-scale parallel execution
Build and support real-time data pipelines using tools like Kafka and AWS services
Develop data-driven services such as customer profiling and machine learning APIs
Collaborate with quants and analysts to understand and deliver on modelling requirements
Work with our Data Engineering colleagues to establish shared approaches to accessing data warehouse data, using tools such as Redshift
Monitor, optimise and trouble-shoot database, microservice, stream and ML service performance
Support and monitor production systems including trading applications and data services
Work within a Scrum team, contributing to Agile ceremonies and owning your team’s delivery
Ensure robust testing (unit, integration, end-to-end) and support CI/CD processes
What You’ll Bring:
Our product's backend runs in Java , so a proven track record of at least 3 years working with this technology (preferably Java 8+) would be ideal - but... If you have extensive experience working with similar OOP languages, that is not a problem as the underlying concepts are similar - just know that if you join us you'll be working with Java.
Our teams also work with technologies such as Scala, Kafka, Akka, Memcached, Apache Storm, Apache Cassandra, Zookeeper, and some others... Ideally, you should have working experience with most/all of these but if not, don't worry - we will have your back!
Experience working with a high concurrency/high transactional/highly available platform;
Familiarity working with Client-server protocols such as SOAP, and REST;
Expertise using established design patterns and encouraging appropriate use of reusability techniques (e.g. library extraction, new component creation);
